Degraded Acceptability and Markedness in Syntax, and the Stochastic Interpretation of Optimality Theory∗

چکیده
Conceiving grammaticality as gradient poses problems for those traditional conceptions of grammar which assume that linguistic expressions can only be either grammatical or ungrammatical. That a sentence is, for instance, “grammatical to 75%” is a nonsensical statement from this point of view. In this tradition, generative grammar assumes the native speaker’s linguistic competence to be the system of rules with which, among other things, she classifies sentences as either grammatical or ungrammatical. A linguistic theory is explanatorily adequate to the extent that it successfully models this underlying knowledge. As a consequence of the categorical view on grammaticality, generative models rarely reflect gradience. The minimalist program (Chomsky, 1995) for generative syntax knows “converging” and “crashing” derivations, which conform to grammatical and ungrammatical structures. But

Optimality Theory, markedness and second language syntax: the case of resumptive pronouns in relative clauses
Eckman, Fred R. 2004. Optimality Theory, markedness and second language syntax: the case of resumptive pronouns in relative clauses. Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology 10.1. 89–110. This paper proposes a constraint-based analysis for what is arguably the most interesting phenomenon in second language (L2) syntax, the occurrence of an L2 error pattern where the regularity cannot be e...
متن کاملControl Theory and Economic Policy Optimization: The Origin, Achievements and the Fading Optimism from a Historical Standpoint
Economists were interested in economic stabilization policies as early as the 1930’s but the formal applications of stability theory from the classical control theory to economic analysis appeared in the early 1950’s when a number of control engineers actively collaborated with economists on economic stability and feedback mechanisms. The theory of optimal control resulting from the contributio...
متن کاملWhere is pragmatics in optimality theory
This paper deals with the architectural issues of pragmatics within an overall account of natural language in optimality theory. It is argued that pragmatics can be seen as an optimisation problem described by its own constraint system which lies outside the constraint system that defines grammar (the production oriented OT models of syntax and phonology). Speaking and hearing both involve gram...
متن کاملSonority variation in Stochastic Optimality Theory: Implications for markedness hierarchies
Constraints based on the sonority scale and other markedness hierarchies have been formalized in two different ways: as scale-partition constraint families, with a universally fixed ranking, and as stringency constraint families, where the constraints stand in subset relations and their ranking is not universal. We identify a new empirical domain where these two approaches make different predic...
